Entertainment Computer System 31-In-One

Got this excellent piece on Monday Sept. 11 2000, in a good trade deal from Finland.

O.k. as you'll see as soon as the scans load up that the game cart case is a exact copy of the basic Nintendo design, only thing that's different is the color and the very interesting label, the top border of the label says "ASN 0140 THIRTY-ONE IN ONE", (ASN? Asian Special Nock-off? :), on the front scan you might be able to see a crease below the label, if you can you can tell by the crease on the label that it is covering another label, that label is about the right size for a Famicom, I think they used their own cheaper labels until they got a better shop set up, also note on the back it has a listing that was covered up [with very thin paper] for 52 games, if anyone has the original game with those 52 games onone cart please email me, I would be interested in scans of the original label and the circuit board, and some of the other staffers may want to talk too if you want to trade it.

The Title Screen
The Title screen is very interesting, the game toggle screen is inside a border of different smiley type faces one is happy one is straight faced and the other is a frowning one, it has two clown looking guys that each go one at a time from one side of the bottem of the tv screen to the middle of the screen and hit the game list screen right above them, it changes the tv screens color from a light one to dark one [color varies],the smileys switch to another neon color and then the charactor goes back to his side off the screen and the other comes back on, they do this for like thirty seconds then they start chasing each other, the screen above them list the games with a curser that you use to select them, here are the games with their listed name, their screen name, and true name, note some are unidentifiable so if you recognize it please send in more info so we can add it.

Special note, about all the games have a hacked screen to replace the name and rid them of the copyright info, below is the list of how they appear on the game, please email me at rhett@angelfire.com if you have more information to add or a correction on the below titles.

Game Reviews

The Following will be a set of small reviews, the more unknown the title, the more detail I'll go into it, some like Mario Bros I will give a brief description on what has been hacked or modded in the game, but on the more unknown titles I'll give a larger description.

Special note, all the games are hacked to were there is no copyright or publisher info on the screen, some have changed titles in the game which is listed below.

All games have a one player option and if it has a two player option it will be listed at the end of the review.

The following names are done by the title that is listed on the stage select screen.

Merry 2: This is just Super Mario Bros. 1, if you ask what game is this, you need to stick to the N64, the only differance with this one is on the title screen where "Super Mario Bros." is is replaced with a very home drawn version of mario and a picture of a small castle and the letter 2, no name is on it,[one to two player alternating platform adventure] .

Merry 1:Hehe, this one made me laugh, the screen says "Marry" on the box where Mario Bros." appears, that is about all I can tell that is different,[one to two player simultanious platform action].

Kung Fu: Now this one is interesting, I thought it was the Kung Fu we all know, no it ain't, it is a Famicom title I think, the game starts in a place at where you just battle it out, its like a lame Street Fighter game, I only got to the next guy, first one has a bo the next shoots fire, maybe this is where the projectile shots in fighting games originated from, has some lame animation and people but control is pretty good,[one player Fighter game].

Circus: Hmm, never heard of this one, millert has a "Circus Caper" game listed, I don't know if they are the same, it is a real odd game, you control a badly drawn clown charecter riding on a lion in a badly programed circus, the object of the first stage is to jump over fire shooting jars and in flaming rings, second stage is to jump over monkeys on a high wire, third is jumping from one beach ball to another, jumping is slightly better than that of SMB1, but graphics look like that of a Active Enterprises programmer,[has one player A and B and two player A and B] I think B is supposed to be a little more speeded up[one to two player alternating platformer].

Exerion: This one is pretty neat, it is a good looking somewhat complex arcade shooter, the ship shoots a limited number of auto-shots with the A button and the B shoots a twin unlimited shot, but it only shoots once, you have to wait until it goes off the screen to shoot with B again, every time you hit a ship you get another auto-shot, and the ship can do that bank left bank right look, instead of having a fixed aircraft, they, [original programmers, not the pirateers], budgeted some memory to make it a little more relistic. the landscape changes too, not too bad, [one to two player alternating side scrolling arcade type shooter]. Ice Man: This one here is Ice Climber, I think Ice Climber is pretty neat after playing this so I might even get it, I can't tell if it has any differences exceipt for no copyright info, you just play some dude that has to constantly travel up in different types of platforms and thrue various baddies, has some stiff play control and a high dificulty but still neat,[one to two player simultanious arcade platformer with stage select].

Ballon: This game hear is Balloon Fight, I thought it was a hacked Famicom game or a modified Joust but Nakoo said it was a actual game, upon reviewing Millert's list I found out it is a real released NES game, this game here is like a souped up Joust, a pretty fun game on two player,[one to two player simultanious arcade platformer].

Macross: This one here had a odd title, and a even odder beginning, and a even more interesting game, it begins with a "press start" screen, and the rest is in Japanese, then a Japanese girl comes on screen and hits a gong, and then some text comes on and says Valkyrie 3 left ready, then a ship goes on screen and stars appear then you have a Gradius type adventure, but you have a life bar and you have some more interesting options....the ships a freakin transformer, you can pick between a space ship that makes the screen scroll forward fast and shoots slow, a odder looking pod thing that has the back engine type things tuck under the ship and makes the screen scroll go somewhat slower forward but shoot faster and go up and down quicker, and then a cool robot with a blaster that shoots fast and can shoot forward or behind itself but makes the scroll go insanely slow, toggling between ships requires some different movement combos of the Directional pad and the A button, but not hard to do when you get used to it, you also have some type of odd missile launch system that launches a large group of missiles when you hit select, they then home in on the baddies on the screen you can shoot them three times and I think in later stages can get more sets of them, it has few power up options but it does have a life bar. I would say this game would have been neat to have seen released here, with a few alterations,[one player side-scrolling shooter].

Arabian: This one here looks like a sequel to Skull & Crossbones, which was made by Tengen and arguably the worste title they made, you are a little arabian looking dude that runs around a ship climbing up and down the mast and running left and right touching jars whilst kicking or jumping over odd looking blobs of pixels, the most identifiable one is a big bird that drops smaller birds,[one to two player alternating, platformer].

Popeye: Just the arcade version, not much to say, plays like the NES version, which is almost a direct port of the Atari 2600 one, real bad graphics, very few stages and no plot, [one to two player alternating platformer]

Tennis: This is the Nintendo one, from what I get of it off the net, it is as one person said a updated harder pong, not too bad, somewhat entertaining, [two player simultanious sport].

Galaga: a excellent game, has an original title screen too, which is odd, but my beef with it is that it resets the game when you die and after it shows the statistics of your kill shot ratio, not real good for keeping track of score,[one to two player alternating arcade shooter].

Zinja: This is what I would say is a fair game, it is like Zelda [because of the overhead view], exceipt it has a two player alternating function too, you are a ninja that goes around this odd rice patty field thing and use a boomerange to hit other bad ninjas with whilst collecting coins, haven't got to the second stage yet, nor figured out a reason to play, if it had some story and a few more weapons options it would be a zelda game,[two player alternating overhead adventure].

Mappy: A very odd puzzle platformer type game, you are a mouse in a house that has to use odd spring ropes to jump up and down and go to different levels of a house while trying to collect different household items [stereo is one], not that well programmed, the graphics are kinda like the SNES game Krustys funhouse[one to player alternating platform-puzzle].

Baseball: Ugh, this is the worst baseball game I played, it is badly pixelated and some of the score set up is in Japanese, it is two player but not real good, I would rather pull out one of my Tengen versions, oh well, not bad if you don't have a baseball game[one to two player simultanious sport].

Pack Man: About the same version as Pac Man, but the ghost's names are in Japanese-American text, the red ghost is "Akabei", blue ones name is "Aosuke", Orange one's is Guzuta, the only one with their right name is Pinky, only one was translated, still like the NES version,[from what I've read],not bad since I don't own it [one to two player alternating arcade puzzle].

Wrestle: A odd game, very bad graphics, [not pixelated, just look like they were pulled from a two-year-old's sketch pad], but play control is pretty good, I wonder why so many bad graph-games have good handling whilst some good games have bad handling, you get to pick two people to tag team against the computer or a friend then you duke it out on a wrestling platform, a fair game, good entertainment to look at the odd characters and have them fight it out,[one to two player simultanious fighter].

Champion: Ugh, if this is street champion I ain't buying the game, I was actually shocked to find out Nintendo made this piece of crap, you start out as just some punk dude that constantly fights it out with another, your friend or a computer, not very good, you just keep trying to knock the dude to the next screen and he does the same with you, you do this three or four times to him and a man hole appears in the next screen to knock him in, then it repeats a little harder, not much to it though, just seems to keep going, very lame,[one to two player simultanious arcade? fighting].

Galaxian: This here is what some would say is a better or worse version of Galaga, the ship shoots just one shot until it hits something or goes off screen and the enemies are a tad slower, but you have more enemies and they shoot more often, [one to two player alternating arcade shooter].

Karateka: Ugh!! The worst title on the game, you are some lame programmed Ninja with very bad play control [one player only??? fighting???.......I don't know, it's to awful to spend more then three minutes reviewing].

Pin Ball: I'm pretty sure this is Nintendo's Pinball, never played it but it is pretty cool, and it doesn't cost any quarters either, pretty neat title, just that you can't treally simulate a real pinball machine on a home consel, oh well,[one to two player alternating .......what chategory is it??????].

Sky Force: It is only listed on Brazillian games in Millert's list but I think it is a Famicom one as well. This is a cool arcade shooter, but when you play you know it ain't American, you control a Zero fighter with a behind-the-aircraft-arcade-view that has to fends off Spitfire aircraft and shoot torpedos at U.S. ships, scenery changes are cool, from regular day time to sunset to night, pretty hard to me for now, the plane handles well and has more than one frame programmed so you can see it bank left and right,as a grandson of a WW2 vet, I would like a U.S. version just for the REAL fun of it, but it would have made whoever published it mad I bet so it stayed Japan only,[one to two player alternating arcade over-the-shoulder shooter].

Dajingang: Hehe, they have a odd name for Donkey Kong, just the old classic arcade platform-puzzle,[two player alternating arcade].

Five Chess: a odd game, I know it is Famicom because it is all in Japanese, what it is is a over-head connect four [not five] that you have to constantly block the computer whilst trying to connect yourself, it has several game selects but I can't really tell which one....nor translate what the difficulties are levels are like,[one to two player simultanious board game].

Lunar Ball: AH yes, Pool comes to the NES with Lunar Pool, it begins with the regular pool table and as the stages progress changes to other harder to play table tops, not a bad game, worth picking up if I could find it,[one to two player alternating tv/board game with stage select].

Road Fight: This game here is Road Fighter, a Australian released only game, it is made by Konami, the only way to know that it is made by them is during game play it has a sign in the game that says it, it is a one player only overhead racing game that has two types of game play, which are for difficulty, they are like the " Game A" and "Game B" on Mario Bros., only it is listed as game one and two, you start off as a little car that is in the back end of a race that is beginning, you have a limited amount of fuel that counts down like seconds, usually you run out before you get to the end, only way to renew the fuel is to touch a rainbow colored car that is usually had to get to, whenever you hit another car you spin out and you either have to slow to a complete stop or crash, maximum speed is four hundred kph [this is Australia], this game plays odd though, I think it has to do with changing gears but to start off with fast acceleration you hold down the B button which takes you to 200 kph pretty fast, but to get to 400 you use A after that, a interesting game but not Konami's best, it would be neat for others to see it but it is by no means a major thing to try and inport unless you are the radical gamer type, [one player overhead racing].

Excite Bike: Hehe, on the title screen it is called Motor Match. An old Nintendo classic, I am not too interested in this game but it is pretty good and innovative for its day, I'll play it a little, not much to say about it here, alot of people have reviews of it, it is a side scrolling motorcycle game, all the features are in it like track maker, it still even has that save screen for saving the track, something you can't do in the original or this one nor this one, [one player side scrolling racer].

Zippy Race: Ugh, a lame racer game, you start out as a biker on a motorcycle on a road with alot of dangerous fools in cars, for some reason though they think their cars are cruise missiles and you are the target, it is very lame, a better inpression of it is just imagine that you are the motorcycle dude in Spy Hunter and everything is bigger, well instead of the action of choppers and bullet proof cars and missile firing ships all you do is drive up the road avoiding cars, you are as vunerable as that weenie cycle is and the cars have less road to roam in and more than likely would prefer to run you down anyway,[one to two player alternating overhead racer].

Formation Z: A interesting game, not too great but interesting, you are a side scrolling robot that can jump and shoot strait ahead and at a 45 degree angle and with alot of difficulty can turn into a Gradius type ship but the ship has a very limited fuel supply, you fend off several airborn and eventualy, alot more airborn and some ground targets and when you succesfully figure out how to turn into a ship you go to the next stage, no changing is not a item you aquire, I've done it at the beginning of the game, it is real hard to transform this ship and thre graphics and play control are pretty bad, but the background art is pretty good, sadly it is the only highlight of the game, the Macross game is better and is what I'm sticking with,[one to two player alternating side scrolling shooter]

Star Force: A interesting and very common arcade shooter, it is like a overhead gradius but has alot less power up options, not much to say about it since it is fairly common and I am planning on doing a review on it later,[one to two player alternating arcade shooter].

Battle City: Wow! Awesome game, sadly though, according to Millert's list this game only appears on one pirated game it is real good too, to bad it ain't a wide ranging release, according to some sceners and other sources it is a Japan release only by Namco. A single screen with overhead view and style of play like that of combat, it has a function of one or two player game, has a level advance to level style of play real fun, object is to just constantly destroy different and various enemy tanks whilst trying not to loose all your extra tanks and keeping them away from your base, when the numbered amount of tanks are destroyed you go to the next level with a different level layout, obstacles include red bricks which you shoot out of your path, silver brick which are highly armored and can only be destroyed with the highest leveled up tank, and it also contans foliage with which to hid under and river that you can't cross and even ice which you have hardly any traction over, the base looks like a odd eagle statue and is surrounded by a double brick wall that the enemy tries to destroy, you control a tank with basic function that can power up to a super tank, and you have the occasional enemy that comes on screen flashing red that after you shot gives you one of many game options, some include a tank upgrade, a shield, extra man, and hardened down base,[ one to two player simultanious overhead arcade type shooter with stage select].

Final Thoughts
Well this is a excellent game for beginning collectors, gamers, or even big shot -own-'em-all NES freaks, if you are a beginning collector it gives you a idea on what to look for for playing fun or rarity, it helps gamers by just getting them alot of titles in one buy, and it is a major space saver for those that have alot of carts but don't want to waste the easy-to-access storage space in the entertainment center.

On another note, I brought this game to a friend's house and his NES wouldn't play it due to the lockout problem while my older model NES did a perfect job of it, I'll post his NES's serial number when I get it.

It's a pretty good pirate, has about five real crapper titles but then again has some fun non-U.S.-released games, as with any pirate I suggest anyone that sees it get it, in total it cost me about $17 in games,[I payed seventeen dollars, the games actual values though were around twenty five and shipping was like $6], so I would say that this was worth it either way (since it is darn near inpossible to get full value for any games anyway), and....... dare I say it.........may actually be worth a dollar a game. :D

Special thanks to:
Nuuska for getting me the pirate itself.

Millert for his comprehensive game list.

Deathspork and Sappy for info on a game.

And the people that like to challenge Nintendo :)
